Song Without Words

Bones loves music.

It soothes him when he is angry and upset. It gives him courage and determination when he needs it most. Music has always been there for him, through the loneliness of his divorce, til now, loved by many.

We can always see him in his office, lounging back in his seat, sometimes with his eyes closed, earphones firmly plugged in his ears, just being saturated by the music.

I always watch him. It’s almost fascinating, watching his mobile and expressive face, move with the music. I can always tell when the song is sad, his mouth turns down and there is pure sadness etched into his face. Likewise when the song is upbeat, a smile hovers around his mouth and all those much loved smile lines appear and crinkle with pleasure.

Chapel scolds me for not concentrating on the ship and for the need to jolt me out of my deep trance so I can go and command the ship I love so much.

But every night the music is put into his bag which is left by the door, and that intense focus is fixed entirely on me and I shiver from the love in those hazel green eyes.

Every night he takes me in those gentle arms of his and treasures me like he does his music. I am the only one who sees this side of Bones, the quiet but passionate interior.

I never heard the music in my name before Bones said it.

“Jim.” He breathes into my shoulder, and it makes my heart race more than any huge orchestral piece can.

Together we transcend mortality.

Together we make a song without words.
