Geniuses

John had always had a weakness for geniuses, and it seemed that nothing had changed now that he was known as Leonard McCoy.

~*~

The moment he met Jim on the shuttle, bruised and rough lipped, he had known the younger man was trouble. It was there in those eyes, bright blue and challenging, sizing him up over the metal of the flask.

He didn’t need anyone to tell him that Kirk was a genius, He just knew.

Something about the young man brought to mind Samantha. Maybe it was the fair hair, the look in those eyes, maybe it was the defiance. But there was a lot that wasn’t like his brilliant, long dead sister.

Jim was all fire, quick and searing, burning through the ropes of the bridges, trying to reach across the chasm he had put between everyone and his heart. Jim would never confine himself to a sterile laboratory, studying the past, Jim could never have the detached morality of the true scientist.

And maybe that was why he stuck beside Kirk as they left the shuttle. Maybe that was why Kirk stuck with him through years as a Cadet. Maybe that was why he couldn’t leave Jim when it came time to board the Enterprise.

That inner part of him, the soldier from RRTS, the part that still had the soldier known as Reaper, had stirred when it heard the distress call from Vulcan. And it was that inner part that caused McCoy to turn and grab Jim’s arm, tugging him along.

Never underestimate a distress call.

~*~

The moment he met Pavel on the Enterprise, clean and fresh faced, he had known the young man wasn’t trouble. He was brilliant. It was there in those eyes, golden amber and completely open, gazing up at him as he spoke.

He already knew Chekov was a genius, but the reality of it stunned him.

Like Samantha, Chekov could calculate, could hypothesize. Like Samantha Chekov could throw himself into his work, forgetting all else around him. But there was a lot that wasn’t like the detached Samantha.

Pavel was all water, flowing and sensuous, unchanging in his positive outlook on life. No matter how many rapids, no matter how many falls, the boy would come out the other side unchanged. No matter if his heart was hurt, and the waters froze for a while, cold and hard, time would cause the ice to melt, and Pavel would return.

And maybe that was why he watched Pavel so much when he was on the Bridge. Maybe it was why Pavel often came to his office to talk, debating literature and Russian culture. Maybe it was why Jim watched both of them with that look of calculation on his face.

The inner part of him, the Reaper, longed for Pavel’s presence as much as it longed for Jim’s. Three different pieces to the puzzle, three very different men.

But together...?

~*~

Together was good, McCoy thought, the first time he fell asleep with Pavel draped across his chest and Jim snuggled up along his side.

It shouldn’t have surprised him that his two geniuses had gotten together, bending those fair heads to plot their scheme.

They had cornered him together, Jim stroking his cock while Pavel leaned back against the opposite wall, that husky Russian accent twisting the filthy words tumbling from his lips until McCoy had submitted with a desperate moan. Jim who was all hands on while Pavel hung back, testing out his theories before throwing himself into the experiment with wholeheartedness.

It had been Jim, all wicked mouth and hands, seducing his body. It had been Pavel, all sinful words and images, seducing his mind.

It had been both of them, wrapped around each other, mouths meeting, hands stroking, seducing one other, and him.

And finally it had been him, pinning Jim underneath him, hand anchoring Pavel by his cock, and showing them that he too was a willing partner.

~*~

He might not be a genius, but perhaps it was a good thing that he was not. He had Jim, and he had Pavel for that after all.
