Trek Fan Soundtrack

Being the absolute music nut and musician I am this question tends to hop around my head a lot. A hell of a lot.

'What piece of music do you think of for...?'

I wanna know what songs you think of when you think of Jim, or Bones, or Spock, or Jim/Bones, Chekov, Reaper!Bones...anything really! Anything from the Trek universe. And I dont just mean like the actual movie soundtrack, thats given.

Any piece of music. Doesn't have to be lyrical really, even instrumental pieces can make you think of a certain fic or a certain piece of art, or a scenario that you have imagined.

General suggestions:

- Characters: Like Jim, Bones, Spock, Chekov, Sulu, Uhura, Scotty...on and on. What song do you hear as their theme?

- Pairings: eg. Jim/Bones, Jim/Spock, Spock/Bones, Bones/Chekov, Sulu/Chekov, Spock/Uhura...what do you hear when you read them?

- Fan related: Songs that make you think of a particular fandom fic or artwork?

- Doom Trek: Things that make you think of Reaper!Bones and everything related to that style 'verse.

So? I'm curious guys :)

I realized a random one today - Gordon Lightfoot's Sundown makes me think of Kirk/Spock, particularly possessive!Spock.

For me, the ultimate song for Jim & Bones as a couple or just friends is "Less Than Ordinary" by Carbon Leaf. There exists a Jim/Bones music video with that song and it's been their song for me ever since.

As for Jim, "Seagull" by Bad Company and for Bones, the self-titled "Bones" by Little Big Town.

What do you hear?

[identity profile] missmarie9.livejournal.com 2009-09-04 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and for Jim seducing Bones, "Lover" by Devendra Banhart.

Personally, I think this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hi7rHY3dxo8) is the one true theme song for Spock/McCoy.

oh, and some Bones-divorce music: Ain't No Sunshine. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIdIqbv7SPo) :D I can definitely see Bones moping to this, bourbon in hand.

Ingram Hill's 'Why Don't You' always makes me think of 'Two Men and a Motorbike'. Also, 'Take My Lips' by Ferras makes me think of Jim/Bones, though I don't really know why.

http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/m/martina_mcbride/i_just_call_you_mine.html

I Just Call You Mine by Martina McBride just screams McCoy/Kirk to me.

Chorus: And everyone that sees you always wants to know you and everyone that knows you always has a smile your standing ovation after years of waiting for a chance to finally shine everyone calls you amazing i just call you mine.

There are several other songs that remind me of McCoy/Kirk - what can I say, they are my OTP.

And for Pike/George Kirk, there's one song that stands out.

The Dance, by Garth Brooks.

Holding you I held everything
For a moment wasn't I a king
But if I'd only known how the king would fall
Hey, who's to say you know I might have chanced it all

And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance

'Cause, in my mind, Pike and George were so in love.

[identity profile] jem80.livejournal.com 2009-09-04 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Nickleback's "Gotta Be Somebody" is my Bones/Kirk getting together song. Especially the verse "Nobody wants to go it on their own and everyone wants to know their not alone." Everytime I hear that I see them.

Spock/McCoy:
Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own by U2
Thief by Our Lady of Peace
Call and Answer by Barenaked Ladies
Love Is Wide by Carrie Newcomer

Spock/Kirk/McCoy (although I don't really ship them as a threesome)
The Moon over Tucson by Carrie Newcomer
Dreams of Our Fathers by David Matthews Band

[identity profile] athelasleaf.livejournal.com 2009-09-04 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Since you mention U2, "One" is probably good for some pairing within and angsty context. The "carry each other" part of course makes me think of Bones/Kirk (probably bc I ship them like burning) but I could see it working for others.

My Bones/Jim playlist

[identity profile] bijjy.livejournal.com 2009-09-04 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Don't ask me why but to me, these just fit the pair.

-Starlight by Muse
-Bones by Little Big Town (Hah! Odly appropriate title I think but I think it works for either of the boys. Even if th song were named something else, it would still be on my list)

-Wonderwall by Oasis
-Let Love In by The Goo Goo Dolls
-What About Now (Acoustic) by Daughtry
-It's My Life by Bon Jovi
-I'd come for you by Nickelback
-Rocket Man by Elton John
-21 Guns by Green Day
-Amazing by Aerosmith

That depends. A lot of the time I write with a certain song in mind; said song can normally be found in the 'music' section when I post. But it varies, again, depending on the mood of the piece or even how I'm feeling at the moment.

Jim: Broken Sunday by Saliva
Bones: Black Heart Inertia by Incubus
Reaper!Bones: Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins

...to name a few.

Jim/Bones

I completely agree with [livejournal.com profile] bijjy on Starlight by Muse. I mean, seriously, read this (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/muse/starlight.html) if you don't know it. I'd also like to add After Tonight (http://www.metrolyrics.com/after-tonight-lyrics-justin-nozuka.html) by Justin Nozuka to the Jim/Bones list. It's beautifully sung, besides.

Pairing wise?
Why don't you and I? by Alex Band and Santana fits Kirk/McCoy like the shiz. Truefax.

I've already said this to someone, but I'd like to say it again: I dislike that there isn't a McCoy/Chekov fanmix. Maybe this thread will result in one.

Personally, my song for them is 'Four in the Morning' by Night Ranger - no idea why. bones/Jim is "Craving (I only Want What I Can't Have)" by Tatu, Jim/Spock (idk why they're all for pairings) is "Do What You Want" by OK Go.

I'm pretty sure I have other songs that make me think of just one character and not a pairing, but right now, those are the only songs that come to mind.

EDIT:

I feel like such an idiot. Cobra Starship's 'Hot Mess' is totally Jim's theme song in my mind.

IAWTC. Personally mine for them is Flightless Bird, American Mouth by Iron and Wine. And All Alright by Sigur Ros. I'm a sucker for angst!soundtrack.

I have a whole list! I just wish I had seen this while listening to my ipod, because i have seriously a lot.

for one, 'scientist' by coldplay for spock or spock/kirk
and oh so many more! It makes me sad I cant think of them all. :/

[identity profile] athelasleaf.livejournal.com 2009-09-04 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I love that song. I think Coldplay is kind of hack/played out, but I could listen to that particular song a million times! The video is amazing too.

[identity profile] moralimperative.livejournal.com 2009-09-04 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
aw man, i'm not nearly as cool as y'all.. my music is way older.

the easiest song for me to make up my mind on, is my jim's this-is-how-much-i-love-you song when he thinks of bones, which is avanti (10 don'ts for honeymooners) (http://www.tonys.demon.co.uk/monochrome/avanti.txt) by the monochrome set.

...
I'd build a pyramid on a pole
With Frosties packets and glue
I'd serve rubber bullets in bowl
And call it Irish stew

I'd change all the water into wine
And walk on the dead sea
I'd sing the song of the Golden Rhine
With an augmented flea

I'd make the world in seven days
I'd pasteurize the Milky Way
Sing, yi yi yip, yip yipee yay

I'd play hoop-la with Saturn's rings
I'd tie a knot in Erroll Flynn's
Sing, yi yi yip, yip yipee ying

I'd juggle with Jupiter's moons
I'd flaten the Sahara's dunes
Sing, yi yi yip, yip yipee yoon

I'd kick Mars into a black hole
I'd spread plum jam on Denning's rolls
Sing, yi yi yip, yip yipee yum

...

(if you look at the lyrics, the written "don't"s are all clearly "i'd"s when they sing it.)

otherwise jim feels like a wild card to me. i think of him sometimes when i listen to songs like rolling stones' prodigal son, or stray cat blues, and even songs like comfort eagle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p99a6K81zqM), by cake.

This ages me, but this song another McCoy/Kirk song for me.

Save The Best For Last - Vanessa Williams

Sometimes the snow comes down in June
Sometimes the sun goes 'round the moon
I see the passion in your eyes
Sometimes it's all a big surprise
'Cause there was a time when all I did was wish
You'd tell me this was love
It's not the way I hoped or how I planned
But somehow it's enough

And now we're standing face to face
Isn't this world a crazy place
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last

All of the nights you came to me
When some silly girl had set you free
You wondered how you'd make it through
I wondered what was wrong with you

'Cause how could you give your love to someone else
And share your dreams with me
Sometimes the very thing you're looking for
Is the one thing you can't see

And now we're standing face to face
Isn't this world a crazy place
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last

Sometimes the very thing you're looking for
Is the one thing you can't see

Sometimes the snow comes down in June
Sometimes the sun goes 'round the moon
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last

You went and saved the best for last

Practically anything dealing with Georgia for Bones, though I think my fav song is "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay" by Otis Redding for Bones. That and "Georgia On My Mind" by Ray Charles.

Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay - the two lyrics that fit the best:

"I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the 'Frisco bay
'Cause I've had nothing to live for
And look like nothin's gonna come my way...

Sittin' here resting my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
It's two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make this dock my home"

"Heroes" by David Cook for Kirk/Bones. The lyrics just fit them both, to me at least. Plus I just LOVE that song.

"I Wanna" by The All-American Rejects SCREAMS TOS!Kirk/TOS!Spock to me. In a very angsty way.

"I'm Still Here" by John Rzeznik. Jim, 'nuff said. And Spock, actually.

And yes, as one poster said, "Rocket Man". Fits Bones really damn WELL. :B

And on an angsty-romantic note, "If I Fell" by The Beatles is my song for Bones when he's realizing that he's falling for Kirk rather hard and is afraid that if he acts on it, he could be hurt again.

I think I'ma stop now before I keep adding more. >.>;;;

This such a great thread! I picked up a Kirk/McCoy Space Married prompt that was all about music, so I spent a lot of time building playlists for Jim and Bones and then weaving music into that story. (Total Music Nerd!) I even posted the (music from) soundtrack with it, but that didn't even begin to cover it. ( http://cate-mmds.livejournal.com/4423.html )

Bones:
Georgia On My Mind by Ray Charles is at the top of the list.
(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding
The Back of Your Hand - Dwight Yoakam

In Bones' head (and mine), one of the songs that best describes Jim is Highwayman by The Highwaymen:

I was a highwayman. Along the coach roads I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five
But I am still alive.

I was a sailor. I was born upon the tide
And with the sea I did abide.
I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico
I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed
But I am living still.

I was a dam builder across the river deep and wide
Where steel and water did collide
A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado
I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound
But I am still around..I'll always be around..and around and around and
around and around

I fly a starship across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again.

[identity profile] lisamariedavis.livejournal.com 2009-09-04 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
YES! I freaking love that song and it first Kirk perfectly.

And when I reach the other side

It might be because it's a huge earworm for me lately, but I think it also fits this situation. "If I Fell" by the Beatles the definitive Bones pining after Kirk song.

"If I Fell"

If I fell in love with you
Would you promise to be true
And help me understand
'cause I've been in love before
And I found that love was more
Than just holding hands

If I give my heart to you
I must be sure
From the very start
That you would love me more than her

If I trust in you, oh please
Don't run and hide
If I love you too, oh please
Don't hurt my pride like her
'cause I couldn't stand the pain
And I would be sad if our new love was in vain

So I hope you see that I
Would love to love you
And that she will cry
When she learns we are two
cause I couldn't stand the pain
and I would be sad if our new love was in vain

so I hope you see that I
would love to love you
and that she will cry when she learns we are two.

If I fell in love with you

[identity profile] athelasleaf.livejournal.com 2009-09-04 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
