Night’s Song

The hotel room is silent, blinds drawn across so that only a small line of white moonlight slides across the light beige carpet.

On the bed a man lies, on his back with his eyes closed. His hands rest by his side, his body completely relaxed and he seems almost to melt into the cushions and bedding.

The strange half light of the room touches his face, lending beauty to a face which is strong, a strength that adds to his good looks. But the moonlight softens the contours of his face and he looks peaceful.

More peaceful than he has in weeks.

In his ears are earphones, connected to the small old fashioned music device which rests on the bed beside his hip. The music flows from the device up into the man and slowly melts through him.

From the doorway Bones watches.

He does not envy Jim this peace. He does not wish he was in his place. He is simply happy that Jim looks so content, so unlike the hard, scared and angry man that they sometimes see after a mission has gone badly, or a crew member lost.

Slowly he moves into this world of stillness and quiet, and shuts the door to the hallway with its bright lights and business behind him.

He crosses the room and slowly, carefully sits on the bed beside Jim. He does not want to disturb him.

Jim’s large pale eyes open and focus unerringly on him, but he does not change back into the hardened bitter man that they all now know. Instead he smiles, slowly and softly and pulls one earphone out of his ear and offers it to him.

Bones lies beside him, the darkness lending him peace and he knows why Jim came here instead of down to the noisy pub with the rest of them after the Shore Leave began.

The earphone is slipped into his ear and the sweet, soft music slides through him like silver mercury. The music is beautiful, it captures this moment perfectly and slowly Bones raises his dark hazel-green eyes to Jim’s deep blue.

They watch each other for a long moment and then their eyes close together.

Slowly their breathing evens out and Jim slides into sleep, his body curling vulnerably into Bones’s. The taller man wraps an arm around him, feeling protective, and knows sleep is drifting ever nearer.

He can feel Jim’s heartbeat, slow and steady against his own chest.

The music lulls him to sleep and his head slowly rests against Jim’s, their hair intertwining. His dark with Jim’s light.

In his sleep he smiles and so does Jim.

Because there is something comforting about someone else’s heart beating to the same rhythm as yours.
