Title: How It Ends
Author:
miss_m_cricket
Fandom: Star Trek Reboot!
Pairing: Jim Kirk/Bones McCoy
Rating: Pg-13
Warnings: Character Death (but kinda is a happy ending)
Disclaimer: You think I own any of this? Nuts, you are.
A/N: Yesterday I questioned myself as to why I can't write fic with a sad ending. And thus this bunny was born. But although there is Character Death included, the ending isn't really sad. So really I kinda failed at fulfilling my own damn prompt xD
Summary: All those years drifting in space and this is how it ends.....
How It Ends
The leaves crunch under his bare feet.
He can’t feel the cold ground under them anymore, can’t feel the rough of the stones, the smoothness of worn rock, the grit of the earth.
He wishes his heart was as numb and unfeeling as his feet are.
He can’t open his eyes anymore; the cold has frozen the tears in his eyes, sticking his lashes together. He walks by memory.
He can sense the light fading around him; see that the insides of his lids are becoming darker and darker.
For the first time since he first began to care, his hair is unkempt, blowing wild around his face.
Bones had liked it scruffy.
He shoves this thought bitterly away before it can attach itself and send him into another spiral of agony.
His feet take another step and another. He is walking on autopilot, wandering through the bush in the mountains not knowing where he is going; only knowing that it is away.
He can feel his energy flickering like a candle flame, shaking in the cold wind that blows around him.
He isn’t dressed right. He knows this, knows that he’s in danger of freezing.
He just doesn’t care anymore.
There is something soft falling on the back of his neck and the feeling is hauntingly like Bones gentle lips planting tender kisses there, like he was wont to do.
He can almost see him, in his minds eye, dark hair falling into his eyes, which are soft with love, and those teasing lips pressed lovingly to his pale skin.
He rubs his eyes, unfreezing them, freeing himself from this painful memory, and looks around him in wonder.
White snow is falling around him, thick and silent.
Tears fill his eyes once more and he sits down hard.
Bones loved snow.
The forest is silent around him, bearing a voiceless witness to his wailing sobs as the dam of sorrow in his chest is broken.
He bends his head, feeling the cold engulf him from all sides.
He feels no fear, only icy acceptance.
All those years drifting in space and this is how it ends
He falls sideways, all energy gone and stares up at the cloudy sky above.
The snow falls over him and covers him like a white duvet.
As the darkness closes in the snow seems to take a shape, laughter in dark hazel green eyes, looking back at him.
“Bones…” he breathes, reaching his hand out to his lost love.
The woods are silent, except for the wind blowing through the snow.
But if anyone had been there to see it, they would have seen the swirling snowflakes form something, almost insubstantial, that looks remarkably like two men holding onto each other and laughing.
