Being the absolute music nut and musician I am this question tends to hop around my head a lot. A hell of a lot.

'What piece of music do you think of for...?'

I wanna know what songs you think of when you think of Jim, or Bones, or Spock, or Jim/Bones, Chekov, Reaper!Bones...anything really! Anything from the Trek universe. And I dont just mean like the actual movie soundtrack, thats given.

Any piece of music. Doesn't have to be lyrical really, even instrumental pieces can make you think of a certain fic or a certain piece of art, or a scenario that you have imagined.

General suggestions:

- Characters: Like Jim, Bones, Spock, Chekov, Sulu, Uhura, Scotty...on and on. What song do you hear as their theme?

- Pairings: eg. Jim/Bones, Jim/Spock, Spock/Bones, Bones/Chekov, Sulu/Chekov, Spock/Uhura...what do you hear when you read them?

- Fan related: Songs that make you think of a particular fandom fic or artwork?

- Doom Trek: Things that make you think of Reaper!Bones and everything related to that style 'verse.

So? I'm curious guys :)

The song "Lovin' Arms" by the Wood Brothers has a total angsty Bones POV feel for me. Personally I heart Kirk/Bones, so that's the kind of lens I'm seeing it through, but it could really be Bones/anyone. It's a beautiful song regardless, y'all should listen to it (http://www.last.fm/music/The+Wood+Brothers/_/Lovin%27+Arms). I submit the lyrics as evidence:

Ridin' a big jet plane
Cryin' into your sleeve
'Cause you miss those lovin' arms

A lullaby keeps on playing'
You're thinking it's a dream
'Cause you miss those lovin arms

And you got a good mind to pray
They it's all part of His plan
But what if He's got slippery hands?

Well it's a sad face you're wearin'
Like a burned out sun
'Cause you miss those lovin' arms

You'd think a grown man would care
'Bout his bootlace undone
But you just miss those lovin' arms

God damn, you're a boy, not a man
When you miss those lovin' arms

Well someday, when you're up there flying
And you miss those lovin' arms
It isn't so far away, that sweet lullaby,
When you miss those lovin' arms

Pining, loneliness, self-chastisement for being a sap, and a hint of aviophobia - with a hopeful ending.

McCoy/Kirk

Well, here we are again;
I guess it must be fate.
Weve tried it on our own,
But deep inside weve known
Wed be back to set things straight.

I still remember when
Your kiss was so brand new.
Every memory repeats,
Every step I take retreats,
Every journey always brings me back to you.

(chorus)
After all the stops and starts,
We keep coming back to these two hearts,
Two angels whove been rescued from the fall.
After all that weve been through,
It all comes down to me and you.
I guess its meant to be,
Forever you and me, after all.

When love is truly right
(this time its truly right.)
It lives from year to year.
It changes as it goes,
Oh, and on the way it grows,
But it never disappears,

Chorus

Always just beyond my touch,
You know I needed you so much.
After all, what else is livin for?

And this - I know a lot of people make fun of Celine Dion, but this is one of my all time favorite songs.

For all those times you stood by me
For all the truth that you made me see
For all the joy you brought to my life
For all the wrong that you made right
For every dream you made come true
For all the love I found in you
Ill be forever thankful baby
Youre the one who held me up
Never let me fall
Youre the one who saw me through through it all

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldnt speak
You were my eyes when I couldnt see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldnt reach
You gave me faith coz you believed
Im everything I am
Because you loved me

You gave me wings and made me fly
You touched my hand I could touch the sky
I lost my faith, you gave it back to me
You said no star was out of reach
You stood by me and I stood tall
I had your love I had it all
Im grateful for each day you gave me
Maybe I dont know that much
But I know this much is true
I was blessed because I was loved by you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldnt speak
You were my eyes when I couldnt see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldnt reach
You gave me faith coz you believed
Im everything I am
Because you loved me

You were always there for me
The tender wind that carried me
A light in the dark shining your love into my life
Youve been my inspiration
Through the lies you were the truth
My world is a better place because of you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldnt speak
You were my eyes when I couldnt see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldnt reach
You gave me faith coz you believed
Im everything I am
Because you loved me

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldnt speak
You were my eyes when I couldnt see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldnt reach
You gave me faith coz you believed
Im everything I am
Because you loved me

Im everything I am
Because you loved me

For now, just one contribution

There's something about "Come Round Soon" by Sara Bareilles that just makes me think of Jim/Bones. The closest I can come to an explanation is this (http://ceres-libera.livejournal.com/679.html). Maybe I'm just into the angst with these two (even though it can be more mind breaking than most).

Has no one mentioned...

Black Velvet by Alannah Myles for Kirk/Mccoy?

I'm completely in love with the fanmix Love Will Tear Us Apart, especially the McCoy disc. I'd say I think of that a lot for McCoy. Specifically "The Death of Me" by City and Colour.

I think of Kirk when I hear "Let's Dance to Joy Division" by The Wombats

Also for Kirk/McCoy I think of Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" or "Less Than Ordinary" (artist?)

Um, I also think of Pinto when I hear anything by Plain White Tee's :-)

Oh god um also McCoy falling in love with Kirk is totally "Halo" by Beyonce in my mind.

um, and I might just think of Kirk when I hear "American Girl" by Tom Petty. except ya know... he's a guy. ;-)

Well she was an american girl
Raised on promises
She couldnt help thinkin that there
Was a little more to life
Somewhere else
After all it was a great big world
With lots of places to run to
Yeah, an d if she had to die
Tryin she had one little promise
She was gonna keep

Thanks to a Yelchin-mix someone made a little while back, for me McCoy/Chekov's song is Flightless Bird, American Mouth by Iron & Wine.

That said, All Alright by Sigur Ros makes me think of them as well. Sigh.

'I Was a Teenage Hand Model' by Queens of the Stone Age has hungover/introspective Jim stamped all over it. Its also has sound samples (more evident near the end) that for some reason remind me of TOS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzC6R4f6qLw

Cozied up to the toilet
Face stuck to the floor
I met expectations that I was tryin' to ignore
Job had such patience
I wonder, what's that like?
One hundred thousand million
But I hear
That's what you like
So I was thinkin'...

So these cities are sprouting
Like a spit in the eye
And this world isn't waiting
It's just passing me by
I just peak in the window
Lookin inside
The butcher's got a fork in your face
I'm standing in line
And I was singin'

Because [personal profile] inellhas written Slow Southern Style (http://inell.livejournal.com/754213.html#cutid1), Black Velvet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UTRMP1Uk1k)by Alannah Myles is totally my Jim/Bones song, even though I know that it's actually about Elvis.

Just read the story and you'll know what I mean.

I think for their relationship for them being together is 'Into Dust' by Mazzy Star. It's an amazing song and rather angsty and I think their relationship would be angsty for some reason :)

I have a bunch of Kirk/McCoy songs, since I'm in love with the pairing!!!

I always thought "Drops of Jupiter" by Train would be such a good song from McCoy's POV for them (especially after Jim comes back from Delta Vega). The really Kirk/McCoy - ish lyrics are:

Tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back to the Milky Way
And tell me, did Venus blow your mind
Was it everything you wanted to find
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there
....
Now she's back in the atmosphere
I'm afraid that she might think of me as
Plain old Jane told a story bout a man
Who was too afraid to fly so he never did land

There's a bit of gender confusion, but hey! :)

I also think that Wonderwall by Oasis, Must Have Done Something Right by Reliant K, Love Remains the Same by Gavin Rossdale, and When You Were Young by the Killers are great Kirk/McCoy songs
Whenever I hear Heartless by Kayne West I think of McCoy/Jocelyn.

Spock/McCoy (in TOS) in my other favorite Trek pairing. The song for them in my opinion is I Hate Everything about You by Three Days Grace

Spaceman by Bif Naked
I wonder why you choose those others
And you never come to call on me.
When I'm the one who's waiting for you
I really need you - please pick me!

Spaceman, oh spaceman!
Come rescue me from this!
Calling all aliens!
Come rescue me

Uhura on Spock/McCoy or Spock/Kirk
I won't cry (Fuck U 2) by Bif Naked

Perfect Skin by The 69 Eyes I feel like Kirk could sing this about a girl of the week

I may love you a little for posting this discussion because I've been failing to find my Trek music and it's stifling the muse!!!

I did listen to Crashed by Daughtry today and thought, yep, that Bones and Jim's first meeting on the shuttle! :) I'm thinking Daughtry may just be about to make it as my muse.

Every time I listen to music I tend to think of a character singing it. Sometimes, it's terrifying. Sometimes it's down right hot. Here's what I usually come up with.

Jim - "Jezabel" by Ricky Martin. I could totally picture him singing that beautiful cha-cha piece (even if it starts out as a tango) as I am sure he has met quite a few "Jezabel" characters in his career as a man-whore.

Bones - "How Sweet It Is" by Michael Buble. Bones is a classy kind of guy so I picture him, if he was to be described by (and most likely sing) a song in my mind I'd picture him as crooner like Buble.

Spock - "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga. Spock always has a poker face on to hide his feelings towards people and situations. You wouldn't know he loved you unless he wanted you to know. No one can read his poker face (except maybe Jim XD).

Uhura - "Lose my Breath" by Destiny's Child. The song issues a challenge to the man who would dare to woo her to make her lose her breath. Very much a strong woman's song and this is the definition of Uhura. I could totally picture her singing it too.

Scotty - "We Be Burnin'(Recognize It)" by Sean Paul. Yes, reggae. Scotty will always be the man with a hard to understand accent with a good enough sense of beat to create a catchy tune with a fine taste in women and an even better appreciation for partying.

Sulu - "Polkarama!" by Wierd Al Yankvoich. I get the impression Sulu is just nerdy enough to be able to remix the best songs of the year into one song but be cool enough to not insult the original artist while making a parody. He's the type that would appreciate all types of music... so long as it's a good one.

Chekov - "DotA" by Basshunter. Techno = Chekov. It's a given. The kid is way too peppy and mathematical to fit any other genre and what's better than the idea that he'd play DotA and write a song about it? Basshunter's voice is also in the same pitch I'd picture Chekov's in so long as he sang in Swedish.

Added Bonus:

Reaper!Bones - "DIE MF DIE!" by Dope. Yes. For Bones to go Reaper on someone's ass, they deserve it. If he breaks his one rule against killing he'd be thinking/singing at least the gist, if not the entirety of this song.

Oh I forgot to post this! Doh! I wanted to say that for "Life Changed on s Shuttle" There's several chapters that will be written to this song almost exclusively. It, to me, embodies everything I want to convey in those chapters. It's from Doctor Who. This is Gallifrey

Dude Garth Brooks definitely has the ultimate Bones song for me:

"Learning to Live Again"

I burned my hand, I cut my face
Heaven knows how long it's been
Since I've felt so out of place
I'm wonderin' if I'll fit in.

Debbie and Charley said they'd be here by nine
And Deb said she might bring a friend
Just my luck, they're right on time
So here I go again.

I'm gonna smile my best smile
And I'm gonna laugh like it's going out of style
Look into her eyes and pray that she don't see
That learning to live again is killing me.

Little cafe, table for four
But there's just conversation for three
I like the way she let me get the door
I wonder what she thinks of me.

Debbie just whispered, "You're doin' fine"
And I wish that I felt the same
She's asked me to dance, now her hand's in mine
Oh, my god, I've forgotten her name.

But I'm gonna smile my best smile
And I'm gonna laugh like it's going out of style
Look into her eyes and pray that she don't see
That learning to live again is killing me.

Now here we are beneath her porch light
And I say what a great time it's been
A kiss on the cheek, a whisper goodnight
And I say, "can I see you again".

And she just smiles her best smile
And she laughs like it's going out of style
Looks into my eyes and says, "We'll see"
Oh this learning to live again is killing me
God this learning to live again is killing me

Spock/Uhura
Disease by Matchbox Twenty (mostly spock trying to figure out wtf is happening to him lol)

Feels like you made a mistake
You made somebodys heart break
But now I have to let you go
I have to let you go

You left a stain
On every one of my good days
But I am stronger than you know
I have to let you go

No ones ever turned you over
No ones tried
To ever let you down,
Beautiful girl
Bless your heart

I got a disease
Deep inside me
Makes me feel uneasy baby
I cant live without you
Tell me what I am supposed to do about it
Keep your distance from it
Dont pay no attention to me
I got a disease

Feels like youre making a mess
Youre hell on wheels in a black dress
You drove me to the fire
And left me there to burn

Every little thing you do is tragic
All my life, oh was magic
Beautiful girl
I cant breathe

I got a disease
Deep inside me
Makes me feel uneasy baby
I cant live without you
Tell me what I am supposed to do about it
Keep your distance from it
Dont pay no attention to me
I got a disease
I think that Im sick
But leave me be while my world is coming down on me
You taste like honey, honey
Tell me can I be your honey
Be, be strong
Keep telling myself it that wont take long till
Im free of my disease

Yeah well free of my disease
Free of my disease

I got a disease
Deep inside me
Makes me feel uneasy baby
I cant live without you
Tell me what I am supposed to do about it
Keep your distance from it
Dont pay no attention to me
I got a disease

I think that Im sick
But leave me be while my world is coming down on me
You taste like honey, honey
Tell me can I be your honey
Be, be strong
Keep telling myself it that wont take long till
Im free of my disease
Yeah well free of my disease
Free of my disease

Jim: as said before "Wonderful" by Rob Thomas.. no really lol

Look at me I'm made of wonderful, wonderful
I'm all easy breath and steady
walk, steady walking
But underneath I'm barely moving, no
Its like I'm nothing
All the ways they had to make
me smile and then they go and break me

[Chorus]
Wait, I think I feel like hell
Though I can't be myself
And I can't be nobody else but if I could
Would you love me then [x3]

Look at me, I'm made of
wonderful, it's terrible
I'm all easy come and easy go
[ Find more Lyrics on www.mp3lyrics.org/FVEZ ]
As far as you know
But underneath, man, I'm just killing time
I guess I'm past my prime
and now I'm overrated,
overdressed, and overstated

[Chorus]

If I put my hands up, put your hands up
If I fall down
If I lose my place
And I don't know just where
I'm supposed to go
If you'll be there when I wake
Would you love me then?

And I come home tired
And I come home late
Everybody wants me
So I give it away
I'm a wanted man [x4]

Would you love me then [x3]

I meant to post on this the other day and got distracted.

I think these songs are kind obscure but for Spock/McCoy I always think of "Nothing in My Way" by Keane.

And for McCoy "Gimmie Sympathy" by Metric.

Come on, the line "I can feel it in my bones" always gives me a smile.

Crashed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XqBNHKpR64) by Daughtry has been my Kirk/Bones song since the movie came out. I think it fits them perfectly.

Then I crashed into you/And I went up in flames/Could've been the death of me/But then you breathed your breath in me.

Also, I have about a dozen Girls Aloud songs I relate to Trek and Kirk/Bones, but my ultimates have to be Untouchable (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZDn1g0J-_o) and Nobody But You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkP4xzJnX0E). Both amazing. Untouchable links to the single mix but the album version is a 6-minute long epic that is definitely worth a listen if you like it.

Untouchable -Only love can save us now/I need you here again to show me how/I know that love shouldn't be so hard and sometimes we're standing in the dark/But you light up everywhere I go

Nobody But You - You slide into my head/My so-called life gets kind of grey/My soul ain't yours to steal/But each time we roll you've got the wheel/My eyes they sparkle/Even when you're not around

And, because I think about it way too much, I'm With The Band (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDSvM6KccKY) by Little Big Town is now my reboot!crew theme song. Because they are rockstars.

Lord, I was born with a suitcase in my hand/Livin' a life that few can understand/Sometimes it gets so confusing that I don't know where I am/But I always know who I'm with/I'm with the band
